The purpose of this website is to publish the results from an EC Product Group Study related to the Ecodesign of Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive 2009/125/EC (recast of the former EuP Directive 2005/32/EC) for ENTR Lot 5 Machine Tools and related machinery, which came to an end in August 2012. This study was contracted to Fraunhofer-Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration (IZM) and Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionsanlagen und Konstruktionstechnik (IPK).

This site underwent periodic evolution throughout the course of this study. Stakeholders were invited to follow the progress of the study through this web site. Stakeholder involvement is a crucial part of this study.

This product group study aims to identify and recommend ways to improve the environmental performance of these energy using products throughout their lifetime at their design phase based on the European Commission Methodology for Ecodesign of Energy-using Products (MEEuP). The information provided by the study will be used to prepare for subsequent phases, including undertaking an impact assessment on policy options and to prepare a paper for the Consultation Forum. Those phases are to be carried out by the European Commission.

Initially, this study went through a product category definition stage in order to establish the scope for all subsequent stages of the analysis. This study identified:

  • Market characteristics for the products
  • Relevant environmental aspects of the products and their technical/economical potential for improvement
  • Existing relevant legislation
  • Self regulation by industry and standards
  • Needs for standards to be developed
